You're So Sweet (High/Low Technique)

Morning all!  This is a really simple card which I did to simply show off a lovely technique that I have been enjoying of late.  I didn't want to cover it all up with flowers so that you would really be able to see how it was done.  I started with a piece of black card then covered it with a piece of sticky self adhesive sheet.  Using the background from my Italian Collection, I ran it through the Grand Calibur.  Since the sticky sheet adds a layer of thickness to the card, the pass through the Calibur will easily cut through it, but probably not through the black card.  This is actually what you want for this technique.  If, however, it does appear to have cut all the way through in spots, before removing it from the die, place some cello tape over those spots so they will all stay together, then remove the die cut.  The back of it won't show and you want the entire piece in tact for this technique.  Next, using your pokey tool, simply lift away the parts of the design that would be the fall away bits, in this case, the roses and swirls.  It does take a bit of time, but the results are very pretty in real life.  Once they have all been removed, cover all the exposed sticky areas with gilding flakes (or glitter or mica if you prefer).  I used the Summer Meadow gilding flakes here for this project.  Burnish them into place using a Rubit Scrubit pad and lightly remove any excess flake.  Dust it away with a tissue before moving on the the next step.  Next peel up the remaining bit of the backing paper revealing the actual die cut pattern.  I used micro beads and dipped the entire piece to coat all the remaining sticky areas.  Using my finger, I burnished them down well, which also brings the background colour up stronger.  Now you have the results of the High/Low technique with the high being the micro beads and the low being the gilding flakes.  It makes for a spectacular bit of texture on your backgrounds, you will just want to run your hand over it, trust me!  I stamped my sentiment, embossed it in gold and cut it out with the tag from the California Collection.  I cut another tag in black, split it and used it as a shadow behind the original.  I mounted it with foam in the lower corner so it wouldn't cover too much of the background design.  I finished the card with a white pierced mat and a final solid white mat.  The finished dimensions are
6" x 7 1/2" in size.  Just a reminder, the weekly card giveaway winner will be posted on Monday's blog this week.  All for now, Sue x

Lovely card Sue. Gorgeous rose focal. Hope you and all the visiting Wilsonettes have a great time at Ally Pally. go girls go.
Norah, so lovely to see you comment, please Hun, take it easy, one day at a time. We are all with you.
Cheryl, so glad nymph nodes are clear, once op is done, you will start to feel so much better, always a giant hug for you. Ecco Janet, same hugs for you too. Craftynanna, hope your hubby is feeling better, now you know you can be more prepared. I will let you give him a big hug. Tinker bell, you are a brave lady. I find that I need to practice the glue dots a little on scrap before I start, gets me into the flow, and my layers are all the same weight of card that I am using. I only pierce the top layer. Hope that makes sense. Red fox, welcome, you are now a Wilsonettes. Steph, hope injection went well.
Finally, I have not received my card from Sue's show last week, did I dream my name being called out.
Again, my basket of hugs is open for all, help yourselves.

Good morning Sue
Your background dies are the first thing I buy out of every launch because they are all so amazing and versatile. In fact your Valencia background die was the first die that I bought out of your first launch. Today's card is so pretty and I very often use the high low technique but have never tried doing it this way.
Tinkerbell I'm sending you a hug your one brave lady. If I need to keep my mind occupied I make loads of different flowers, or I make very intricate cards for the special people in my life.
I hope everyone has a fabulous day at Ally Pally I know Sue will.

Morning Sue or evening, depending when you can catch enough breath to catch up with your blog. Hoping that AP is another massive sucess for you, and I know it will be, some of us arn't so lucky to be joining you today, so hopefully we can feel we were there via some photographs ? Maybe, please : )
How odd, some pictures look black and some a really navy blue on my screen, either way its such a pretty easy peasy card lol - panic ? What me ? Never, high/low technique, noooo problem, with me eyes shut : 0 those new family members will soon get to grips with me and 'pesky flakes' !! Providing our Sue keeps showing them that is ! And if you are new to this wonderful place, then a warm welcome, its the best place to be (apart from AP) !
Well, we are off to Preststyn Wales on Monday, Mr L thought the new(ish) 4 paws would enjoy the sand under her pads, not that I need a change of scenery or anything like that !!! So 4 day's in Wales with no wifi : (
I still have prep to do ready for market 2 days after we get back, so its head down and get cracking to catch up with unmade cards. How will I survive 4 days away from my craft den ??! So much to learn, so many new techniques to get to grips with, cant do that if I dont have my 'special treasure's'
Talking of special treasures (you know who you are) I hope the pain is less severe today, that the sorrow eases each day, and that you all return to Particraft soon, its not the same without you. To my lovely lovely ladies, my cuddles and love is waiting for you to take as much or many as you need to get through the day.
Love you.

Hi Sue
Gorgeous card. Love the technique. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the show.
To Pam....I once won a book cover made with the pleather technique by having my email pulled out. I never got it. I complained to C&C who, after many emails from me, gave me a £10 voucher to spend with them. I never did get the book cover. I think there must be some not very honest people working there who help themselves to the samples they want. Hope you get your card.

morning Sue
I'm afraid I'm going to be in the minority today as your Saturday gift is not doing anything for me. I find that there's too much black and though I love monochrome today's colour scheme is just not me. I do love the die you've used though.

To all who are AP bound today have a really good day and of course I'm not envious at all!!!!!
Perhaps one day we all might just meet up.

It was lovely to see my complete Wilsonette Family together again yesterday.
Take great care of yourself Norah and just remember you're in my heart always.
Sandra - Please give my regards to your lovely husband who is very brave tackling the journey to AP but most of all being surrounded by Crafters! I'm sure that at the end of today he will be in need of a lovely glass of wine or two lol.

It is the most dismal day again but to cheer me today is 'Operation Table' which arrived yesterday afternoon. Please stand by as I just might need a bolt hole later today as it has to be assembled!

To all who are feeling a little under the weather stay strong and for everyone take care and stay safe. See you tomorrow.

Hi Sue well I hope you have had a good breakfast this morning and have got plenty of water to drink during the day. This card is really pretty, worth the fiddle of picking out the little pieces. I hope you have a fantastic day meeting all your followers and demonstrating your lovely techniques to them. Take care love Diane G xxxx

As you know, Sue, I'm a lover of black so this background with the flakes suits me very well! Think I may have put an ornate back/gold embellishment on, rather than the stark white sentiment, with a couple of your great stick pins, flowers and a very big bow!!

Love this technique - I've made a Christmas card with gold card and a reindeer - it's my favourite card.
Pam & Brenda - my story of C&C - I won a card on one of Julia's shows.
I wrote and complained it hadn't arrived. They 'looked in to it' and sent a card which certainly wasn't a Julia card!! I wrote and complained that it looked like one they had found on the floor and sent to keep me quiet!!! They replied: sorry that I wasn't happy with the card' and that was the last I heard. I vowed I wouldn't email again BUT sometimes can't help myself thinking I might be lucky next time!!!
Have fun at Ally Pally and send love to Sue and Julia and Phill !!!!

Hi Sue. A beautiful card for today !! I love this background die and although I do not have this particular one I have some of your other background dies I could try with this technique. I have used gilding flakes many times on cards but still have yet to try micro beads or iced snow glitter over the top !! I must just go for it and try it out. Your card looks lovely with the little tag sentiment but I think it looks a little bare !! I would be tempted to add a couple of beautiful classic roses and some faux quilled leaves or even your beautiful new petite vinery leaves !! Sorry Sue, I just can't help myself !! Your cards just look so stunning with them on and to me they look as if they are finished then. x x x

Your card may be simple but the technique that you did show off the die cut very well...
Well done Sue

Hi Sue,
beautiful - love this technique but then I'm a sucker for gilding flakes. I've also got the Italian background and it does seem a shame to cover it up with toppers of any kind. So I generally and let the die do the work, with interesting background behind it and just a small accent.
But I must admit, haven't done this one yet - on the list for someone special.
Just beautiful, thank you for showing us.
Hugs, Rose

Looks gorgeous I may try this if I have the patience!

Lovely card although it does look quite dark on my laptop. Haven't tried this technique yet, may give it a go.

PAM I received my card from Sue on Thursday but it sometimes takes about a week to arrive. I won a Phil Martin card and it took 10 days to arrive so don't give up yet.

Hi Sue and everyone
A really lovely card for the brave at heart! This one looks so rich and opulent, I still have not taken the lid off my flakes yet, but as I am unable to find a rubit scrubit pad or block I think that is the safest way. Well that is my excuse and I'm sticking to it!lol.

Pam so sorry to hear you have not received your card that seems to be the norm with C & C and after their guests donate the cards the least they could do is look after them and send them safely to the winners. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the guests make fewer cards now, where once they would make 2 or 3 sometimes even more now quite often they only make one?

Sue I hope you are having a successful and happy time at the show and hope that everyone lucky enough to go has a fantastic time and a safe journey home.

To Pam, Yorkielass, Sandra, Cameeli, Lynda, Lyndsey, Steph, Norah and Tina have a lovely weekend girls.

Warm wishes and hugs are here in abundance help yourselves folks.

Afternoon Sue. This is a very rich looking card and as you said less is more. Could be made in to a mens card by changing the die. Will try this one. Hope everything is going well for the team at AP and you are having a great time.

Hi Sue and everyone, Pam I received my card from the Sunday show on Friday so hopefully yours is on the way as well.
Sue, I love this card but I'm hanging my head in shame admitting that I can't for the life of me work out how you cut the design out with the sticky sheet already on the black card :(. Would I get the same effect if I cut out the design, then put a sticky sheet on the front side of the card then turn it over and put the gilding flakes on the pieces of the design that have been cut out, then turn it front side, take the backing paper off and use the micro beads? I really don't know why I'm being so dense over this as I usually manage to follow how you're making the card quite easily. Would you be dong a video of this so that 'little miss dunce' here can see what's going on? As always, thanks for sharing with us, it's another stunner. x

Hey - Bejay, you're not alone love. I couldnt get to grips with the high/low technique the other day, I watched, watched, scratched my head and watched some more, I couldnt understand why that the pattern on the die was all sticky with the sticky sheet, but the rest of the base card round the diecut pattern wasn't !!! I did one similar that Sue put on the blog a few weeks back now, the striplet die was used, where you put the striplets onto your base card which is covered with sticky paper and guild through the striplet patternand that is a lovely technique if you've not tried that yet - ( try not to hold your breath for too long though) when placing the sticky sheet down then placing your cut striple die over the sticky sheet!!! Im petrified im going to lose my grip, cuz when that card falls, boy it sticks and its sianara to another piece of card and sticky sheet !!!
Good luck.
Lancashire Steph xx

Sheila - Ginger - wooohooo craft shop ? Prestatyn ? whaaaat, what a treat, thank you for this information, if nothing.else I can window shop, must leave my card with Mr L though ! If you are near Prestatyn, could I ask you pray for warm weather - not hot, Im not a greedy person, but warm would be good so I can at least leave the caravan, rather than.stay in by the bloomin fire lol !

Hi Sue, beautiful card, love ones made in dark colours as they are so striking. Must try the high/low technique as it gives great results.

Daughter took me to AP today but not able to stay long as stomach still quite bad( hubby on the warpath cuz I have put off and off going to drs/hospital) but now he is poorly and waiting for tests on his liver/kidneys
The fur babies are as lively as ever and are busy chasing daddy long legs snapping their jaws in an effort to catch them whilst jumping up and down. I think they may have bits of kangaroo and crocodile in them!!!!

Apologies for not being on the blog but at the moment alot going on. I would like to say a huge hug and lol to all my special friends here ( you know who you are) I will be back blogging regularly again with doggie tales as soon as poss but at present cant think of much but worrying about hubby ( first day out today and had to be ejected from the house by youngest daughter and hubby and told that I was to enjoy myself and hubby would be alright) needless to say spent most of the time ringing to make sure all ok. It might be a cliche but hubby is the best half of me and him being unwell is really scary. I will take as many hugs as you all can send to keep me steady until hubby sorted out.

Lol and hugs lynne m & pesky critters x x x

Mary and Steph...thanks so much, I thought I was the only one who couldn't work out how this is done. I worked out that my alternate method wouldn't work right so I'm still at a loss. I'm hoping that Sue may find time to do a video on this particular card as I really want to try it...I've got the background, sticky sheets and gilding flakes...I just need some 'instructions for dummies' so that I can try it out lol xx
