Orphan Cards

Hi guys and Happy New Years Eve!  I got a laugh a few days ago because someone posted a comment asking if I ever do a bad card?  Ha Ha Ha Ha!  Of course I do, all the time!   Today's post is some (I couldn't get all of them to load!) of the cards that I did this past year that I truly did not like when I finished them. Either the colours didn't work together or the layout wasn't right, I don't know, but for some reason they missed the mark.   They just didn't "sing" to me.  I realise that I am probably more critical of my own work than you would be but I wouldn't waste a day's post to show any of these individually.  The last day of the year, though,  it is worth a post to show all of them together!  The two or three Christmas ones aren't perhaps as terribly bad, but it's too late to post them so I threw them in!  Help me pick the worst of my worst, what is your pick?

Since these cards are orphans and need a good home,  I will  randomly pick a  number from the comments left after this post to find them a new home.  I will post the winner on the 3rd (as well as the winner to the comment game from yesterday) All for now, Sue x

Hi Sue
Happy new years eve to everyone. I would just like to say that if these cards are your "that you didnt like" i would be more than happy to call my good ones.
You are really are a perfectionist. I would like to thank you for all the wonderful inspiration you have given me overnthe past year.

Happy New Year Sue. Not sure exactly where you are looking but these cards look great to me. Mind you, we are all super critical of our own work. Have lost count of the number of my cards that have ended up in the bin. If I were to pick one that did not 'sing' to me as much as the others it would be the second one (the leaves). However, they are all lovely and I would be proud to own them. Thanks for all the inspiration you give to all and look forward to seeing more in 2012.

I wouldn't call these 'bad' ones by any means, but I kind of see where you're coming from in that they don't all 'sing'. The only one that really jars for me though is the second one, as the colours seem muddy.
Have a great New Year.
All the best.

Hi Sue, I to am a perfectionist and have had quite a few orphan cards myself. I think most of them are fine maybe the colours on some don't work, but the designs are fab as usual. I would be very pleased to receive one of them. Well it's nearly here 2012. May I wish you and yours, and also everyone a very Happy,Healthy New Year. Not celebrating this year as Ive got a nasty cold and don't want to pass it on. Lots of love. Jenny L

Hi Sue, well in my humble opinion your cards would always stand well against any others whether you consider them below par or not but I can understand your feelings when you don't feel they reach your own high standards. For me the one that doesn't please my eye so much is the 7th one but it is purely because the colours aren't ones I like personally. I'm sure another person would love it ............ and that's what makes this world such an interesting place ............ we all like something different! I'd still be proud to own any of them though ;-) especially the 3rd one.

Have a wonderful New Year.

Happy Hogmanay, Sue
Well New Year is a time for reflection. These are lovely cards but if I had to pick one that did not sing to you I would guess the first one. Not that it is not lovely but by your standards it might have missed perfect by the smallest hair. You are a hard taskmaster to yourself but all great artists are and these cards are a part of your progress to your goals. If I ever get to be a quarter as good as your least favourite card I will be happy.
Kind regards, Vee x

Hi Sue I agree with the other posts you are definitely too harsh. I would be proud of any of these creations. Cards 4,5,7&9 (numbering down) are stunning & worthy of own blogs. I think the 1st card would sing if you slipped a piece of red card (not raised) underneath the message covering the black between the message & the White raised frame (bringing the eye inwards). 2 Is probably my least favourite but inking the organza ribbon & rose with 1 of the autumnal inks from background & toning down the White of the leaves with vintage photo might give it a brand new look. 3 either needs gold from the embossed stamp used elsewhere e.g. As an embellishment in top right corner or the image re- stamping in dark green to match the ribbon & background. Finally I think 8 is a little tall. Re-locate the ribbon to bottom right and trim. 6 (the feminine love card) is my absolute favourite. It has fantastic use of colour, composition & dimension.
With love & light Theresa

I really can not be critical of the cards with some of the cards, I've made in the past, I love the butterfly one and the last two cards, the others I can't put my finger on it, it may be the colours you are truely a perfectionist, I wish you and your family a Happy New Year.

Boy it would be hard to pick a baddie out of these Sue. They are all so intricate and have either a flower, ribbon or colour to catch the eye. If I was to pick one it would be from the colour combo and nothing else so I will say the yellow and red one:0 Happy New Year to you and your family Sue.

Hi Sue
think the first one (Best wishes) is the one to bin for me. My partner says the bow needs ironing lol but what do men know. Not up to your usual standard.
The rest i wouldn't be ashamed to send.
Glad to see some colour back on your card of the day. The hat pins are something i will have to try. I have been putting beads on wire twisted into a flower. Like them as match up well.
Whats your new years resalution?!?!?!?!

Hi Sue, I don't think 'bad cards' should come into your vocabulary, they are all good. My personal favourite is the 7th card, green & cream -lovely, but I surprised myself by liking the 4th Christmas wreath card the least. If they are orphans I would happily adopt them all!

Hi Sue, you really are a perfectionist (that's why we love your cards so much). I don't think I would be disappointed with any of these and I will definitely be using the layout in some of mine. I guess it is just the colour combination that sometimes isn't quite right, we all know how good you are at choosing toning colours. I think the first red and black one doesn't quite do it for me, but I will still make one in a different colour.
I made three cards yesterday morning with a butterfly theme, all in different colourways and am very pleased with my first attempts. Just have to go shopping then I can make some more, now I have the spellbinding bug! #
Have a great New year everyone!!!

Happy new year Sue, it was me that asked if you ever have any cards that turn out wrong...... well my dear I think that you are far to critical of your work, your standards are extremely high if I was sent any of those cards that you have created I would be more nor happy. I do understand where you are coming from I have made cards and not been entirely happy with them but my friends think they have been great. Thank you for sharing them with us, even though they make you cringe they make us happy. Have a great new years eve and I hope that next year will be a great one for you and your family. Oh Sue, Sue, Sue....how can you say they are bad cards? OK so some are not quite what you had in mind when you started but they are not for the bin, a bit of tweaking here and there and you have something new. I would love to receive any of your creations but if I had to choose my least favourite it would be the third one, the olive green one as I don't particularly like the bauble stamp you have used - but that is just me being picky.

May I take this opportunity to thank you for all your ideas and to wish you and all your "followers" a very peaceful and healthy 2012

Okay, you asked for it so here goes! Those I'm truly not keen on are: number 1,4 (despite the colour), 5,6. You need to do what the rest of us mere mortals do, dismantle them and re-jig, turn each one into 2 different cards, remove the ribbon or cut up sections and make into gift tags. You asked us to comment so hope that's not too harsh. Anyhow, none of these are truly bad and 'bin- able'. Just heard you might be at Bluewater in February. So looking forward to that.
Happy New Year to you, your family and your blog damily.x

Hi Sue, I am sure you could salvage them very easily. I know myself how hard that is, as I would rather make a new complete card than fiddle with one. The only ones I think are not quite 'you', are number 2. Only because I think the stamped leaves are too many for the area. Also number 7, only because of the colours. Rather bright for my taste!
I would like to wish a Happy New Year to you and your family. Hopefully a bit happier than 2011, for us that have lost a family member or a friend.

You are a perfectionist and you do set the bar very high for yourself, knowing that even you sometimes make cards you're not happy with gives us hope that we are not alone when things go wrong - so thanks for admitting it it makes us all feel better. I find it hard to be critical of your work but if I was pushed I would say perhaps card number 2 doesn't 'sing' for me but that is just a colour 'thing' because my fave cards of yours are always the frilly, girly cards that you are so good at. Happy 2012 when it arrives and we all look forward to being inspired by you yet again xx Anne

Well, I like all of them, especially the red-based 'thank you so much' card. The one that doesn't quite work for me is the dark green-based one with the very symmetrical stamp design in the centre.

If a card doesn't work I think you can usually fix it by adding a judicious touch of something or other. I leave the offending article lying around where I catch sight of it now and again and, eventually, it hits me what is missing.

Hi Sue,
Thank you for asking for our opinions, that means alot.
Well as you know I will be honest so I truly hope I don't overstep the mark.
I think No1 is too symmetrical, the paper emphasises this and the red seems an afterthought. I actually like No2 except the bow - wrong ribbon and wrong colour (mix green/black vintage floppy corner bow instead?). No3 is perfect and I think No4 would look perfect also with just white corners cut from another main Doily motif. No5 to me, and please remember these are all just 'my opinions', I'd replace red stamping with clear and a smaller bow of floppy cream vintage ribbon instead of the red crinkle. No6 is my favourite and No7 my least!
No 8 is almost perfect but I would omit the leaves at the bottom completely, they seem too 'in your face'. As to the last, and I bet your glad I'm there by now, I honestly don't know what it is but I neither like nor dislike it. This is the only one I really think I could call an orphan.
Well my friend, I hope I was constructive and not destructive. To all of us here, it is a privilege to see your work and I join with the others to thank you for all your wonderful inspiration. (It's actually lovely to know that you are just like us and make mistakes).
Regards and Happy New Year dear Sue and all

HAPPY NEW YEAR
All your cards are great you are far too hard on yourself. The only one I am not so keen on is the Orange one. That is one colour that I never works with.

HAPPY NEW YEAR,
Love all your cards, you are a little too hard on yourself Sue.
Mind you I think all us crafters tend to do that at some point.
There is only one card in that whole selection that I am not in love with and that is the "Orange one" only because it is a colour I never work with.
Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing what you bring us in 2012.

Hi Sue, as others have said seems like you have very high standards where your cards are concerned, but then maybe if they are going to be on tv and looked at by thousands then you really do have to feel they look 'right'. I would say my least favourite is the second one with the leaves, the toppers just dont 'fit right' but the background itself is really nice! I want to just pick up that green bow on the third xmas one and put it on top of the bow on the stamped bauble! I like the 'love' easel card, but cannot decide on a favourite. I am sure any of your orphans would find a loving home with any of your followers ;) happy new year!

ps I am also finding this interesting, about these particularly but generally on your blog, how different people have different views of the same cards. Also echo the comment can you do some more stamping shows again?

Bad for you is not bad for us Sue

Although I know what you mean, I only send cards if I like how they turn out - other people might like my rejects but I would not send them

May I wish you all the best for 20012

Hi Sue, I would give any of your little orphans a home! The only one I'm a little less keen on is the orange one - and that's only because I'm another lady who doesn't really like orange, not because it's a bad card, it isn't. Surprised so many didn't like the second card as I liked it a lot and was starting to feel quite protective of it as the comments flowed! The third, green one, just needed a litle glitter on that bauble, in my opinion, and I loved the other green one, next to last, with the leaves - but then I love green .. and leaves. Happy New Year to you all, I've just been watching the fireworks on tv, even better than last year. Wish you all good health and happier times for you, Sue, in 2012. Sue x

Sue, all your cards are beautiful, but if I had to choose 1, I suppose it would be the orange 1. Its very 'loud' and not really my cup of tea. I would still give it a loving home though.. lol..

love and hugs

PS. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

I really like most of the cards you posted on this post; there are one or two that I'm not particularly fond of though. Isn't it interesting how sometimes the things we think will go together well just don't make the cut? Thanks for showing us some of the cards that you feel didn't make the cut.

It´s true, there is not worse critics than ourselves... They are not as bad as you describe...
The less nice one for me is the first one, the black-white with the red ribbon... and it´s only because you are saying chose one! I like your orphan cards, including the orange one that everybody is choosing as the less nice!
I wish my bad ones are a little bit as yours... I don´t show them anyways!

I think you might be a bit hard on yourself as these cards are worthy of showing Sue. The card I like the least is number one but my favourite is the next to last one, I wouldn't mind claiming any of them as my own.x

Happy New Year Sue to you and yours. I dont think there is a bad card amongst them. I love the first red and black one. My least favourite is No 2, something just not right for me, might be the WHITE ribbon, maybe cream would have blended better, only in my opinion but as usual your cards are stunning.

Happy New Year to everyone here too

when are you next on C & C

Happy new year Sue, I have to say that all of these cards are great, but as most people seem to be saying, the lesser great one is the second one.

Happy New Year Sue, hope you have a good one.
Your orphan cards are all better than anything I could do so I am not going to choose a bad one. I would be happy to receive any of these cards.

Happy New Year, Sue. I don't think you could e-v-e-r make a bad card Sue. The things you do to Spellbinder's dies leave me reeling sometimes- where do your ideas come from? I have to confess I sometimes use your work as inspiration for my own- your cards are always so unusual. I just love all of your "rejects"

Hi Sue and Happy New Year to you and your family. I know what you mean about your orphans - they are still beautiful cards but not as elegant as your favourites. Mind you I wish my orphan cards were as good. My favourite is the first one and my least favourite is the 2nd one. Cant wait to see you back on C&C for more inspiration, just hope my bank can cope lol.

If I have to pick one, I'd say third from the bottom. The picture makes the colours look not so good. Maybe a better pic would completely change the feel of the card.

LOL, orphan cards too funny Sue! I think all your cards are too good for words at times that you don't really have a bad one in the bunch. Love your work keep it up. Hugs, Mimi

You are exactly like me, always too harch on your own creations, as they´re NOT as bad as you say hun. If I had to choose one, it would probably be the last one, but morte becuase it´s not quite as good as the othre, NOT because it´s bad in any way. I just love the green one before, it´s so gorgeous and just my taste too. and there´s more of these, I really love a lot.

Oh Sue, I certainly couldn't pick one. they all have their own 'charm' and everyone of those cards will inspire someone to look at a die in a different way, or to 'think outside the box'
and for that reason alone they are worthy of being adopted and given a lovely home!
I truly hope you have a Happy, Healthy 2012 Sue.
Huge Hugs
