Just For You

Hello there my crafty friends!  Every year the blog post that I write for today is always one of the hardest for me. March 8th was my Dad's birthday and he passed away three years ago.  I have chosen a card that I think he would have loved too, as I designed it with him in mind.  Clean and simple in design, straight forward and very masculine.  It is a bit a long post today and I will start with the card description first, then I have reprinted a column that my Dad sent me years ago at the end of the post.  Many of you will remember it from years passed.  For today's card,
I selected a piece of chestnut card and used the new Snakeskin 8" x 8" embossing folder for texture.  Once embossed, I ran a Walnut Stain distress pad very lightly over the top to add some variegation to the colour.  I matted it with milk card, then black card.  Next I cut the Times Square in black and used a simple square die in the centre to create a frame.  I added mounting foam to the back to raise it for dimension.  I cut the Union Square in milk card and seated it in the centre of the frame.  Next I cut Madison Square smaller square in Chestnut card.  I used a slightly larger square to mat it in black.  I used the smaller die in the Union Square to create a frame for my sentiment and mounted it with foam over it.  I used a thin line black pen to darken the stitched look around the smaller square, so it looks like leather.  I finished the card with a milk pierced mat, a thin black mat and a final milk coloured mat.  The finished dimensions are 8" x  8" in size.

My Dad sent me this "Lessons in Life" column many years ago. It is sort of a tradition now that I reprint it every year on his birthday.  I hope you don't mind, but it always brings me peace on what would have been his 95th birthday.  I hope you can take something valuable from it with you as I have. Each year I find that something else strikes a chord with me from it. What number from the list do you identify with most?

LESSONS OF LIFE .Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more: 1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. It's OK to get angry 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present. 12. It's OK to let your children see you cry. 13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it. 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks. 16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. 17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful. 18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. 19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer. 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special. 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow. 23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple. 24. The most important sex organ is the brain. 25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. 26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?' 27. Always choose life. 28. Forgive everyone everything. 29. What other people think of you is none of your business. 30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time. 31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 33. Believe in miracles. 34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do. 35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young. 37. Your children get only one childhood. 38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. 39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. 40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's,we'd grab ours back. 41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 42. The best is yet to come.. 43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. 44. Yield. 45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift." Remember that I will always share my spoon with you! Friends are the family that we choose for ourselves I think that we all need to take a few moments every day and be grateful and appreciative of what we have.

I love you Dad!

All for now, Sue x

What a fantastic gift for those males we have to provide for. It suits a vast age range and is a definite for my 'must do' and 'standby' files.

Sue your Dad's piece never fails to remind me of how lucky I am to take time; stand back; think and then move forward. March is a very emotional month for me and mine and although the pains are still there they change a little each year and remember the lessons I have been taught by some very special people.

To all who are suffering and in pain I hope your day gets better. To everyone please take care and stay safe. See you tomorrow.

How lucky you were to have him in your life for such a long time, my dad, David, passed away on St David's Day 28 years ago, he was only 60. I still miss him, and my mum, every single moment. x

Beautiful card Sue, and again, your dad was on the right track with his lessons. I lost my Dad 7 years ago last January, and there are so many things I wish I could ask him about now.

Rose in Chester said...

It's a lovely card you made for your Dad, he'll appreciate it. And most of all, it's the love that goes into that card that matters and he'll know wherever he is.
I love reading the life lessons every year and they are so true but in the hurly burly of life we quite often forget about them. Slap hands and must do better, Rose.
I'll never forget my mum, sister and niece not to talk of my aunties and uncles. Still coming to terms with my sister and niece but at least now it's spring and nature is giving us such great pleasures (of the little kind like snowdrops etc).
I'm sure you're enjoying your holiday without a whiff of work.
Hugs, Rose

Sue, what a beautiful card for your Dad. Am sure he is loving it. Your Dad's lessons are wonderful and so true, each and every one of them. I lost my Dad 13 years ago on my birthday so I share your pain. It takes time to get over the death of someone and remember all the good times you shared together. Thanks for sharing his life lessons with us.

A masculine card for sure, I love it and will no doubt copy the idea for some of the men in my life - thank you Sue. I read and reread the lessons of life, some of them I have heard before but many are new to me. You ask which one rings truest, hard to say as so many of them mean so much. I don't have any doubt that each time I read them I will find something new. Thank you for sharing them Sue and happy birthday to your Dad to day.

Hi Sue, I wanted to say 'beautiful' but that doesn't seem quite right for a man's card. It is certainly eye-catching and I love the snakeskin embossing folder - yet more for the wish list. I am sure your dad would love this card, it is so precise and just right for an ex-military man.

As others have, I too printed off the Lessons of Life when you first shared them with us and I look at them from time to time to remind me that we are never too old to learn.

Nanna Tina - Happy Birthday, I hope you have been getting spoilt.

Hi Sue, the card is beautiful, especially the embossed background. It's a bitter-sweet day for you today, Sue and I know just how you feel. I lost my dad and mum six months apart (my mum died the night of Mother's Day) and even though it was 2006 and 2007 I miss them both every single day. I was totally lost for ages, worse I think because I was their carer. I loved your long post today and I hope that you've managed to smile at the good memories of your dad. x

Hi Sue
I've followed your blog for just over a year and have been touched each time I read the quotes. I lost my dad just under a year ago to cancer. He sounds so similar in outlook to yours.
It took me a long time to come to terms with his prognosis and death, I suffered some really low times but your blog kept me on the road to recovery as I used your tips and techniques as a way to "forget" the ugly in the world. I'd like to say a heartfelt thank you for this. Your mum and dad will be extremely proud of such a talented, thoughtful, generous and kind person.
Your dad will never leave your side.
Love and best wishes

Hi Sue

This card is brilliant, I love the effect of the folder, but I could no way touch that card as I have the biggest phobia ever regarding snakes, I didn't even like writing the word.

Your dad's verse is lovely and so true, God bless your dad X. I lost my mum 7 wks before I got married. I have been married 36 yrs this year and most day's, I think of her and wonder what she would say about how I brought my two fantastic children up. I am so proud of them, and I think that is a big tribute to my mum how they have turned out. Enough now or I will be in tears again.

Kind regards to all :-)

Hi Sue

A lovely card, one I'm sure your Dad would have loved especially knowing his talented daughter had designed and made for him.

I too miss my Dad (and my loving mother too), but I've come to realise that I was extremely lucky to have parents that were not only devoted to each other, but who taught their children valuable lessons on what is important in life and to have respect for everyone else even if you do not share their views.

Time really does help to ease the pain of losing them, but they are always in my heart as I'm sure your Dad is in yours.

Love the snake embossing folder. Can't wait until I can get it. My dad has been gone 11 years and I still miss him. My mom has been gone 7 years. As the saying goes, you don't miss the water until the well runs dry. My favorite "little thing" is Believe in Miracles. My miracle is my cancer didn't invade my spin before we got it out. It's now been 5 years and it is a miracle (according to my doctor) it didn't spread to my spin. I make it a goal every day to make a difference in someone's life each and every day.
