Mother of Pearl Caught in Crystal

Hi bloggers!  Today's video features a technique that I recently came up with while having a play in my craft room.  It gives you a lovely way of adding something interesting to your backgrounds without taking away from your focal elements.

The winner of this week's Wednesday card giveaway is:

Lynda Mellor!!!

Congratulations!  Please email me at americansue1@gmail.com to confirm your address and claim your card.

The finished dimensions are 7 1/4" x  7 1/2" in size.  All for now, Sue x

Before my brain cell runs away with me I want to send good luck to Claire W and hubby for the show. Such a pity there is no card category this year as you did so we'll last year.
Secondly congrats to Lynda and enjoy your stunning card from Sue.

Now onto this beautiful piece of work and lovely video. I've tried your caught in crystal technique but only with the ink as you mentioned but I just have to try this new technique you have found its so subtle but the perfect background for the scenic type card. I treated myself to a selection of the new foundation card colours yesterday my little shop does a pick and mix for us to try so I picked my 25 sheets of new colours and now don't want to part with them lol ! I also had a peek at your new die collection and all I can say is WOW - stunning : )
So on that note I'm off to watch the coming and going of the bank staff so I can pull off the perfect heist to complete my never ending die list !!
Have a lovely day Sue.

Morning Sue
What a beauty. This is majestic and is the kind of card I would expect to find in a really expensive top end boutique. Although I wouldn't find it as I probably wouldn't be allowed into such a place.
Seriously I love this card. It is absolutely gorgeous. Striking but subtle. Beautiful x

Congratulations Lynda - enjoy your master piece x (Robbed again)!

Pat L - have to say although it would be fabulous for you to come to Ally Pally I am so on your wavelength with prioritising your spending x

Rebecca - oh we could have such fun with you but if you continue to say nice things about us then we might be gentle with you x

Norah - I hope your gowping hands are ok. lots of love x

Myra - I have a feeling that Maureen and yourself could be referred to as the gruesome twosome! I am sure if we push hard enough we could get you both to reveal the others darker side x

Maria - how could I? Quite easily which worries me because I am sure that I would not think twice about putting the whole Vienetta in a large bowl to save myself the bother of having to return the freezer! Doing anything nice in your week away? As Lorraine mentioned references. If references are required I can provide them. From what I have read of her pj'd antics in the neighbourhood I do believe I could bring a little more class to the proceedings. She strikes me as a little common! Lol x

Maureen - it appears that you and Myra are playing a little game of one upmanship. We will need to keep an eye on you x

Lorraine - did it not occur to you that had you plonked yourself in the midst of chaos then you would be more likely to get help. Mind you if she had witnessed your cat catastrophe she may have realised that you are quite obviously beyond help. Maybe the invitation has not been extended to you as there is a concern that you may turn up in a flannelette nightie with a cat on a lead. Obviously this would lower the tone to such an extent that we may not be able to show our faces in the near vicinity again for a very long time! I am obviously much classier than you but we do appear to have a love in common - Paul Hollywood and his strong manly breadmaking technique! What more could a woman possibly need/knead?! Love watching bake off and have always been a keen baker but am unable to participate in this pastime as much as I would like. This is probably a good thing if I am able to consume an extra large bag of popcorn and a vienetta in one sitting. Love an extra slice as well - eating as well as watching x

Few things to sort out today but my viewing schedule this evening includes Strictly, Casualty and some Sue videos that I haven't had a chance to watch. I think I am getting old as X Factor isn't really rocking my boat

Have a lovely day. Love to everyone

Hi Sue & lovely Wilsonettes...An elegant card Sue & the background has a calm look of peaceful ambience with the Mother of Pearl technique, I’m sure you showed us this ingenious method during your last demo at CE HQ, loved it then & do now so I really mustn’t waste your efforts to inspire us & say I should attempt to do this before too long, I know I can’t go wrong because you describe the stages so wonderfully in your video. I have the really cute deer family just waiting now for the trees to pop out of the hat (if only it was that simple I would have every die jumping out in one swoop). Thank you for sharing this beautiful card & video Sue it is always very much appreciated x x x

Lynda M; Congratulations on winning Sue’s gorgeous card, ENJOY x x x Sorry Yvonne G I did try x x x

Well my friends; you’ll be pleased to know that I popped myself on the naughty step (not for too long though) for neglecting to comment yesterday - I’m back to work on Monday & I just had to do the mounds of washing, piles of ironing, cooking for the freezer & house cleaning all at a methodical pace to try & get myself back into some kind of routine, took me all day & this morning but I got there in the end.
Speaking of work I have neglected to tell you the funny story involving 2 5 ½ year olds, for obvious reasons I cannot name them so let’s refer to them as boy & girl - simples (as the meerkats say - yes I’m part of the lunatic fraternity aswel; Lol – which reminds me have I passed the initiation yet?) anyways ‘I shall say this only once’ so picture this Mrs B, boy & girl...boy says; “Mrs B are you going to fall off your perch”, this is the moment just like in the movies where if I was drinking tea I would have sprayed it all over him, have YOU ALL recovered yet? I shall carry on; I say “No I’m not are you going to fall off yours”? Girl “don’t be silly Mrs B we’re little & too young to fall off the perch & we don’t live in a cage”, (well I should hope not thought I) “silly Mrs B said they again whilst giggling hysterically”. Well I thought, I have to ask the question I know I’m going to dread the answer to, go on I told myself your an adult you can take it they are only children after all; deep breath “why do you think I’m going to fall of my perch” ? Boy – “cause daddy said that when ladies get really old they fall off their perches & I think you are really, really old” – girl said “she’s not that old just a little bit old” (wasn’t she sweet, shame you can’t hug them)...what can you say to that. I thought his daddy has a slight bad influence on his boy & I vote that his daddy should sit on the naughty step until he comes to his senses - wish I could have said that but chewed back the words instead I replied...”Older means wiser, I know a lot more than you”; but before I could finish - “yes” said boy “older wiser means you are still going to fall off your perch” Well is he going to get a shock when I return Monday & I’m still on my perch; Lol, hope this makes you giggle & hope I haven’t upset anyone ref to metaphor of falling off perch; Lol x x x

Love2papercraft, Laine, Yvonne & friends thank you for the hilarious pick me ups still trying to digest your hilarious comments into my brain x x x

LYNDA B; your comment on 3rd really touched me my friend but there is no need for you to apologise & NO WAY have you upset me DEAR FRIEND, please don’t ever think that as it is always, always lovely to read your comments, every day I keep you, your family, Annie & Bambi in my thoughts so please, please give us a smile. Love ‘n’ (((HUGS))) to you x x x

Wheely bad, Lorraine, Yvonne & friends, I admire that you have/are going through so much yet you still manage to cheer us mere mortals with your wittiness & courage to go on; Love ‘n’ (((HUGS))) my friends x x x

Maria Wishing you a lovely holiday x x x

Well that’s all folks Sending Love ‘n’ (((HUGS))) to you Sue & to all lovely Wilsonettes Beth B x x x

Hi Sue,
What a great effect just using the lacquer and mica powder rather than the alcohol inks for the 'caught in crystal'. It's so delicately beautiful and I can see many uses for it. Thanks for sharing with us. x

I like the use of the lacquer with the mica powder to produce the mother of pearl effect. I think I prefer this to the use of lacquer and inks. The end result is certainly beautiful.

Good Afternoon fabulous Sue and her Wilsonette babes!

I had a marathon session of your Christmas themed videos last night Sue and this little masterpiece was among them. How you come up with your mixed media techniques is beyond me- I guess I have a fear of getting my perfectly manicured fingers dirty....not ideal being borderline OCD and a crafter really is it?:-). However, I have been suitably inspired by this technique ,and it doesn't seem too messy, that i will definitely give it a go- I have no excuses cos I've just received the deer family and luscious trees from my friendly, if slightly traumatised, postman. I can't get enough of your Christmas designs at the minute and I'm really looking forward to getting a liberal coating of Iced Snow in my hair and clothes...and so is Brodie! Just have to make my Mum and Uncles birthday cards first- they have high expectations which with your help I will achieve....fingers crossed!
Had the dilemma this afternoon of going to Doune Castle or getting a head start on those cards-Cardmaking won the day as I haven't had time all week and I'm starting to tremble with the withdrawals.
Lynda, 46 yrs married!, that's amazing and almost unheard of now. I'm glad Annie has Bambi as a companion because I always find that as our pets get older, having a younger sibling to mentor keeps them sprightly and young at heart for longer.
Wheely Bad, good luck with your wedding card- I can truly empathise about your hyperactivity cos I too find it hard to slow down and sit still...I was still hoovering and cleaning with a fractured kneecap and pelvis! I find it very therapeutic to craft, even in bed where I like to cross stitch instead of read, it really keeps the hands and mind occupied.
Saba, Thankyou for your ever so kind invite to Sandra's cyber coffee shop, I will be sure to pop by- I'm not a coffee or tea drinker does she have anything a bit stronger?:-)
Yvonne, common?Moi? I'll have you know that I wouldn't be seen dead in a flannelette nightie, nothing short of silk or satin for me!
You have implied that I may be a slight chav, well I don't even own a velour track suit or a pair of white stilettos and I only shop at Waitrose or M&S. I wonder if a sense of personal insecurity or jealously is behind your brutal attack because it has no basis in fact!
The Cotswold coffee drinkers seem to be satisfied with my credentials and attire so, so should you be.
We do appear to have some common ground despite the fact that you are older-I'm still young enough to enjoy X Factor-I am an avid fan of Strictly too, I've even been to see them live, front row no less and touching distance of Pashas peachy bum:-)
Beth, lovely story, trust a 5 yr old to give you a hard reality check:-)
Have a nice day everyone!

Love and crafty hugs,

Laine 1972xxxxx

First of all, my apologies for not commenting yesterday. I went to bed armed with my tablet, all set to leave my comment and promptly fell asleep! Woke up in the middle of the night with the tablet still beside me!
Love today's card and video. I get such lot from the videos as I can rewind and replay till my heart's content!
Beth you made me smile with your falling off the perch story. I was a teacher for 30 years until I had to stop at Christmas on doc's advice. I wish I had jotted down all the funny stories over the years - I could write a book now and make a fortune (which would of course pay for Sue 's latest dies!!!). Next purchase has to be the pierced squares, just waiting for Joanna Sheen to get them, as most of the other websites don't deliver here.
Hugs to everyone,
Susi in Cyprus

Hello Sue & WW!
I would have commented earlier but it was the wee hours of the morning here and I had worked 48 hours over the course of 4 days. I fell asleep mid-blog. Fortunately my iPhone didn't leave a dent where it landed.
This is such a lovely card! The technique is so interesting and one I would like to try. Does anyone know if it would work with Ranger Glossy Accents in place of the lacquer? I don't know if the products are even remotely similar, I guess I can just give it a try. If it doesn't work, I'll be ordering the lacquer from Joanna Sheen. It's such a pretty effect!
Lorraine, to make sure I have this right, Your dear Brodie is a cat...and he'll walk on a lead? That's really something! I've had many a cat and all but one simply laid down once I put a collar or harness on them and absolutely refused to move. Being an animal lover, I didn't think taking them out for a "drag" was quite right! I did have one that would wear a lead, but I was the one being taken for the walk. We went where he wanted and I was on the other end only to keep track of him. I'm so glad Brodie came home unscathed. But hopefully scared enuf that he won't slip the lead again! Since it was a good outcome, I certainly had a laugh picturing u running about in your pjs (satin and silk of the finest quality of course). What's a "bin lorry"? Trash collectors perhaps? Feel free to to offer more than 1 definition (none of which need be correct-I'll just choose my favorite and go on my merry, albeit, ignorant way).
Norah, I've ?'s for you as well. What does gowping mean? It sounds painful! I didn't realize GC's could be taken apart (well everything that can be built can be unbuilt- but not always rebuilt!). What kind of adjustments were you trying and able to make? Very interesting! I learn so much on this blog.
Yvonne - thanks for your offer to be (conditionally) gentle with me as I learn the ways of the Brits (but I think I'll still get verification elsewhere when the education is supplied by you or Lorraine! ;-) Alas, our attempts to win you the Wednesday card were to no avail. Perhaps the fates have something even more spectacular in store for you! Then me!
That said, I still want to congratulate Linda on her win. It's not that I begrudge you the win, I just want it too! Hey Sue can you make 500 of every card so we can all win each one (Insert evil grin here)?

Hi Sue,

I love this technique, it is so effective.
Your card is a real WOW (wonder of Wilson)

Thank you for this brilliant video, also for sharing your ideas with us.

Well, I had my whole thing typed out and they cut me off! What's shocking to me is that it took this long to happen! I'm not yet done.
Wheely Bad, I too have a love of language- I love to learn new words, their meaning and origin. If I get led too far astray by others (who won't remain nameless), I'll count on you to eventually set me straight. I'm fine if they have a few days of fun with me tho :)
You and Lorraine have talked about having hyperactive minds, but perhaps your brains are just compensating for the times when your body or health is being uncooperative. Sounds like a healthy thing to me. I know I enjoy what spills on to the blog from your hyperactive minds!
Good luck Sue L. in your first craft competition-it sounds fun!
Beth you had me in stitches with your story! Boy child's father is indeed a bad influence! Girl child might be salvageable (but that probably requires she be kept away from said boy child). Take heart knowing that a 5-1/2 year old's perception of old includes everyone over the age of 15! As to the father of boy, he is an anomaly who clearly can't be trusted! Here's to not falling off our perches until we truly are old (which is always our present age plus a minimum of 40 years)! My Grandmother lived to 106 and she wasn't what I consider old until about age 96, so if I'm as lucky, I have a little more than 40.
The age of boy & girl explains their misconceptions about you being old (I'm guessing you are over 15, by how much is irrelevant) - but do they believe you live in a cage? I'm still giggling.
I had every intention of keeping this short. Lesson: don't ever rely on my intentions.
Ttfn & hugs for any takers.
Rebecca in Colorado
Ps since I took so long to write this, I missed your post Susi. We said some similar things. I'm happy Joanna Sheen is there otherwise I couldn't get hardly any of Sue's dies. Would love to hear your stories sometime :)

Hello Sue,
I love the mother of pearl look you get using this technique, bet it would look fabulous using coloured mica powders as well. Today's card is quite simply beautiful, it has a soft gentle quality about it, sounds daft but it makes me want to be quiet so I don't startle the deer family.

Like the other ladies who don't live in the UK, all I can say is thank goodness for Joanna Sheen, not only do they offer a wonderful service but she and Richard and their staff are so helpful and genuinely care about their customers.

Lorraine are you kidding! Do we have anything other than coffee? We have coffee or anything else you fancy in the morning but come evening we have a tanker full of baileys. Maureen has been known to set up an intravenous infusion and take it neat. Now as for being close enough to touch Pashas peachy bottom, I dream of getting close to the aforementioned bottom, how did you resist?

Wheely Bad, sending you the biggest squishy hug ever. Hope the bed rest comes to an end on Monday as planned.

Lynda, congratulations on your win, enjoy.
Love and hugs for all

Wow sue I love the technique used on your card today its stunning xxx the deer were one of my first puchases from your christmas launch and I'm so glad they are wonderful x I will watch the video tomorrow when I have some peace and quiet for a little while x sorry I didn't comment yesterday but we had a run down to bournmouth for the day ( not literally running !!! that would take me about a week ! We popped into the Range and they had such a better craft selection than my local one . Hubby was just about to wander off to the fish section and I shouted " oh my giddy aunt " ! Hubby comes rushing back to check I was ok " look look look " I gasped " they have sues dies "!!! There they was right infront of me a lovely selection of sues festive selection ! On pay day aswell ! They must have known I'm sure x there's just nowhere local to me that I have found that sells them so I was really excited x do you think I'm sad ? Goodness knows what I'm going to be like at ally pally ! I shall be the one with a bored hubby ( need someone to carry the bags !)And with a box of tissues to stop me dribbling over sues merch !
Clare I do hope hubby does well at the show x

Gorgeous card. Hoping to try the caught in crystal technique soon. First I must find my mica powder which seems to have gone walkabout in my craftroom clutter.

Beth you have made me smile yet again with your story today.

Theresa W. I'm so pleased you mentioned your visit to The Range. I didn't know they stocked Sue's dies. I don't get the chance to my nearest one very often (can't really call it local as I seem to live in the wilderness as far as shops are concerned) but when I next go they will be the first thing I look for.

Congratulation to Lynda Mellor on your win.

Take care everyone.
