Seafarers Delight

Hi blog friends!  I am really excited to show Sam Poole's new stamps.  These fab new stamp designs, great for those masculine cards, will be officially released for sale later this month.  I really enjoyed working with these as they lend themselves to so many techniques.  I used the Eco-Green Paints to create the crackle technique I used on the background.  A layer of black paint first.  Next a layer of watered down PVA  (Eco Glue or Cosmic Shimmer brand work well for this).  While the glue is still tacky, I painted the mushroom coloured Eco paint over the top.  I heated it to speed up the drying time and bring out the crackle effects.  The crackle is a result of the drying time between the glue and the top coat of paint.  Once the piece was thoroughly dry, I stamped the map background stamp randomly over it with frayed burlap distress ink.  I stamped my sentiment in black archival ink in the upper corner.  I made a sailor knot using some natural cotton fibre from my craft stash.  I inked it with tea dye a bit to distress it.  I stamped the clipper ship with black archival on kraft card.  I used a white pencil to highlight the ship, the sails and the water.  I cut out a gray circle frame and embossed it with the metal look mask and then sanded over the top to distress it.  I cut a slightly larger circle frame in black to mat it with and added silver PVA glue accents to the edge.  I wanted it to take on the look of a porthole, giving the card more of a nautical theme.  If you like these new stamps that Sam has done, she will be using them on Feb. 17th on her show on Create & Craft.  I know she has some fun demos planned, don't forget to tune in to see.  All for now, Sue x

Hi Sue, Wow! I love the crackle and stamped map background. When I first saw it I thought it was designer backing paper. I think the map stamp would be very useful for any transport vehicle / travel / vintage style cards & could easily become a 'go to' item. Thanks for the sneaky peak - will tune in on the 17th to see more. With Love & Light Theresa. H

Looking forward to Sam's show, Sue x

Good morning Sue,
I'm sorry I am late commenting again but I have been out for a cinema treat with my daughter & niece and it was a late finish. Since then I have been trying to catch up with my fave blogs.
My father would have adored this card if he were still alive and, if I had made it for him, it would have sat on the mantle for weeks. He loved ships & timber (being a carpenter/joiner) and was very good at knots. In fact, being a perfectionist, I know he would have pointed out to me that the Granny knot is not used by sailors because it is unsafe as it slips easily and can jam. It is often confused with a Reef knot, which 'is' used by sailors... boy I must stop, I am starting to sound like dad... LOL!! (but that's not a bad thing I can tell you).
Although he would have been correct, I think the Granny knot is a little more decorative which is why it was often used in heraldry (under a different name).
Wow, that made a change from me singing didn't it (confession- I am singing too: Rod Stewarts, I am Sailing).
Anyway Sue, I really love your card, it is what I call a Man's card. You don't even have to like the 'theme' of this card to appreciate its beauty; its beauty lies in the artistry, materials and techniques you have used. This shows the Sue I love, the tutor/mentor/creator. Thank you for the tips.
Essay over ;). Hope you are good.
Hugs Linda x
