Hi everyone! This morning we are going to our earth tones for the day's card offering. I have this secret love affair with Houndstooth so much so that I can't pass it up anytime I see paper with that pattern. So there, I've confessed (just add it to my ribbon addiction! LOL) For this card, I had a bit of fun making new shapes. The focal element has been cut using Labels 21 but I cut the two fleur de lis side elements out of the label shape (it is difficult to tell, but you are seeing the black from the back piece through the open negative space). I cut the brown piece from the next size down of Labels 21 then put it back in the die vertically and cut it again resulting in the shape you see. The two fleur de lis pieces that I cut out of the cream piece have been added to the top and bottom of the sentiment. I ruched some amber brown vintage ribbon across the card between the two cardstocks and added a rosette made from two of the Samantha Walker Blossom dies. A small button with bakers Twine topped the rosette to help hide the centre of the rosette. I added some black rhinestone swirls to the bottom of the card as an accent. For the finishing touches, I used the pearl PVA glue all the way around the centre focal element and the cream mat on the card. Change the sentiment to suit and I think this card would work very nicely for the male in your life (and we all know how challenging it can be to do guy cards, huh?) I hope you like it!

hello Sue
ReplyDeleteI too love Houndstooth, and Prince of Wales check, but that is not so common anymore. But...I love the card and the colour combination.
Love Marg
I like checks and tartans and even a bit of patchwork too, this card is really inspiring esp for making a card for a male.
ReplyDeleteIt has a kind of rustic feel to it - nice earthy tones and yes, I think it would be a good choice for a male. Love the Houndstooth - I'm a bit like that with polka dots - can't pass them by.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day everyone.

Hi Sue , i have some dogtooth paper (as we call it in Scotland "and we have snow today" )i love this card , have to look out my paper and have a play. I also have an addiction to ribbon i have boxes and more boxes full of ribbon. I am useing it more now thanks to you. Yvonne xx
ReplyDeleteA brilliant card. Would never have thought of using houndstooth paper.
ReplyDeleteYet another fantastic card that can be adapted to anything u want. Love the way u add and chop off pieces. I look at my spellbinders in a new light and how much i under used them. A BORN AGAIN SPELLBINDER
ReplyDeleteHi Sue,
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have put black and brown together, but it works. The hounds-tooth has no appeal for me, but again the combination works. So many of the dies seem to make a huge difference to a card design.

Gorgeous card, I love the backing paper.
ReplyDeleteClare x
Its good to have a more masculine theme now and again I do find them a problem. Thanks for the tip of recutting the dies.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Edwina
Gorgeous card love the colors.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue thank you again for using your spellbinders in a different way. You give us such inspiration. I love what you have done with the labels. Never thought of putting black and brown together, but it works. Take care. Hugs x ChrisB
ReplyDeleteHi Sue,
ReplyDeleteHow do you come up with a new design everyday?!
I love the neutral colours in this one, although I am not a fan of houndstooth I do like paisley and wonder if that might work too.
Sue h.
Pearl PVA glue? How come I've never heard of this??? Wonderful card again Sue, quite manly I think.
ReplyDeleteAnother stunning card, I too, think it would be good for a man. I have got the PVA glue in black and only ever use it for making pearls and not sticking - it is beautiful stuff. Regards, Anne R PS Congrats to Crafty Mop!
ReplyDeleteAnother clever use of the spellbinder dies, since following your blog Sue I have learned so much so a big THANK YOU ;-)you have made crafting so enjoyable. I love the colours you have used in this card I would never have put them together but they look great.
ReplyDeleteHeather x
Nice to see a card that can be made for a male as there do seem to be so few around! It would be nice to see more samples of male cards. I would do the rosette in football (or team) colours and the guys would never realise it was a blossom!
ReplyDeleteElaine
The colours are cool and its fab to see a 'guy' card. Thank you. Christine x
ReplyDeleteLovely card Sue, like brown and black together. Its cold and snowing up here in Scotland, an ideal day for making cards!
ReplyDeleteAnother treat. I love it Sue x

Just spent a happy 20 mins catching up with your cards, I love how you let us know what you have used and they're all stunning as usual. Sue, I got the Fancy Tags 2 set of dies in two sets which I got from the POTW and am using them in my Cuttlebug but am struggling to get the filligree ends out of the die without tearing. I've never had this problem with Spellbinders before - what card thickness do you use and any ideas?
ReplyDeletexxsue
Sue, very different card, shows that a lot of pattern can work

I adore the colour combination used here and the layout is simple but sophisticated.
ReplyDeleteIf this card were a person it would be proud and confident but not arrogant. Distinguished and notable but discreet.
I think I may try this card incorporating Spellbinders Heraldry(S4-300). The open-cut fleur is manly and the crest would look fab for the sentiment. (Can't you tell I have more sons than daughters).
What do you think Sue, sound any good to you?
Have a good week all. Regards Linda
This is beautiful. TFS.
ReplyDeleteI like houndstooth too.
ReplyDeleteI like your new shapes! This would def. make a good guy card.

ReplyDeleteHi Sue, OMG I had a houndstooth skirt this colour when I was a teenager!! That was many many years ago. I love this card too! Hugs Carol S.xx
ReplyDeleteBrown and black work so well, I am generally quite conservative with my colour co-ordination but as you.re often saying 'play around and you'll be surprised with what you come up with'
ReplyDeleteThanks for givin'me inspration on how I could use the pattern: love it everytime I see it, but couldn't think of a way to use it!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you mix up dies and play around to make new shapes - inspirational
ReplyDeleteThis is very sweet! I love the flower and all the shapes! Great job again Sue!
ReplyDeleteYou are a very clever lady when using these dies, you really inspire me. Now if you could call round to my house and bring some of the dies I haven't got you would make my year. Another great card Sue x
ReplyDeletefirst thought was a masculine card. However on closer inspection the bling and 'flower' really make it suitable for females too - lovely
ReplyDeleteBest wishes.
