It's A Double Day!

Hello crafters!  Christmas is getting closer and closer now, so hopefully these cards won't have to be used for inspiration because your card are already finished, right! LOL   This first card is the result of a bit of experimentation.  I started with a piece of clear acetate and drizzled Cosmic Lacquer all over it.  Next I cut some Mosaic Poinsettias out of plain white copy paper and laid them in the drizzled lacquer.  I then sprinkled Calypso Gilding Flakes all over covering almost all of the piece.  I left a few wholes to give some depth to the finished piece.  I covered the piece with black card and set it aside to dry overnight.  It turned out really lovely from the front, but the card was quite warped on the back so I had to press it under a book  for another night before I was able to use it.  If I were to do it again, I would use black tissue paper, like the "caught n crystal" technique as I think that would eliminate the problem with the warped card but still give a similar look to the overall piece.  I matted the piece with a white mat and a thin black mat.  Using the Nordic Trees embossing folder, I created texture on a larger piece of white card and mounted my gilded piece to it.  I cut the Joy die in white and cut the letters in white and glued them together for a tone on tone look.  I cut another one in black and glued it to the back of the word, slightly offset to act as a shadow.   I added mounting foam to the letters and added it in the centre of my gilded panel.  I finished it with a pierced mat layer, then a thin black mat and a wider white mat.  The finished dimensions are 7" x  7 1/2" in size.  Scroll down to see card no. 2.

Card number two is more traditional in its gold and white colour combo.  I used the California Collection Decorative Frames die set to cut an aperture in a piece of white card.  I used the Snowflake Lattice embossing folder to emboss the aperture piece.  I added mounting foam to the back of it to raise it for dimension.  I matted it on to a piece of vintage gold card.  I replaced the Calif. frame by gluing it back into the aperture, but recessed.  The gold card showed through the delicate edge detail nicely.   Next I cut one of the Vintage Baubles, the solid piece was cut from a piece of gold gilded card (which I used the aperture on another card).  I cut the decorative overlay in white card and glued them together.  I cut a cap out of gold card and glued it on top and extended a piece of gold metallic string from it.  I stamped the snowflake bow set on to white card and cut it out with the matching Classic bow die set.  I assembled the pieces to make a pretty 3D bow and glued it to the top of the card with the gold string underneath it.  This card was also finished with a pierced white mat layer, a thin gold mat and a final white mat.  The finished dimensions are 7 3/4" x 8 3/4" in size.  All for now, Sue x

  12. Quite an experiment with the Joy card, Sue, and must say it looks great. Like the bauble card very much, nice use of the California border die for the recess, and what a sumptuous bauble with gold and white overlay - love it!

Two beautiful cards full of inspiration, I love both. I have finished all my Christmas cards ( been doing them all year because I make them mostly for charity) but I still love seeing fresh ideas ready for next year. I must try the first tecnique it looks gorgeous and fun to do. The bauble die has been the one I've used most because I've been able to use all the scrap card I have as the back piece. You know the scraps that every crafter has, not enough to use on a card but too big a piece to throw away lol. I can't choose a favourite I love them both thanks for two great ideas.

  23. Hi Sue and all Wilsonettes. I have to say its the 2nd card for me, its beautiful and I really wish Id invested in the bauble dies, I could kick myself. Hopefully they will still be in circulation after C.mas and I can get hold of them via my special little shop.
Im a mommy again... I had the most wonderful delivery, her name is Lyra, hope you like the choice of name, she's a pretty little thing, a nice weight too, she was just one of my new 'babies' and Im so excited, and quite proud as it was down to what I sold at market that enabled me to 'treat' myself, it was also down to a wonderful friend that I inherited my old festive dies and stamps from that enabled me to sit and make so many cards, and of course all the inspiration I have got from this amazing blog, thank you Sue. Still have quite a few to make so my brain will appreciate all the inspiration you can give us Sue.
Im sending lots of gentle hugs to those friends that hurt in any way today, and I wish for you a better day tomorrow.
    Love you.

morning Sue from a very very cold High Green.
I just cannot believe how quickly Fridays come along and it's another 'Double Day'.
Today's gifts are both gorgeous and would be a wonderful gift for anyone. If I have to choose one it would have to be 'Joy' as I've used 'Joy', 'Peace' and your beautiful 'Angel' this year for my seasonal cards. 'Joy' and 'Peace' are the two things I would love the world to have.

It's my first Christmas Cake baking day today.(I only do two 2lb loaves on one baking day)Mum always made the cakes for the family and now it has passed down to me. I make them using her recipe which was her Mum's and so am keeping the family tradition going. The only thing missing is someone to 'stir their wish into the mixture' as my two girls and their children are not close enough to be here on baking day. We always did this as children and as I lived very close to Mum/Dad I carried on doing this along with my children when they came along. I love the fantastic smell of Christmas Cake baking and this year it just might ignite my Christmas spirit.

To all who are absent I'm hoping all is well and sending hugs. To all under the weather I hope you feel better soon. To everyone please wrap up warm; take care and stay safe. See you tomorrow.

I fully intended to start them sooner but was just not in the Christmas frame of mind! But my craft room is now a sea of baubles, holly, glitter, poinsettias and peace! I have made a promise to put a Christmas card on my blog every day for a week or so as this gives me the push to do it! I couldn't have done it without your amazing inspiration and dies Sue, thank you xxx

Janet, how lovely that you have an old family recipe to follow as a tradition, I bet your home will smell gorgeous today, is it a complicated recipe to follow or a traditional Christmas cake recipe? We like you live miles away from our families, due to Paul's job, I do miss those lovely family traditions, I guess we have started to make our own now, like the baking on Christmas Eve, usually all of my children get involved in baking mince pies and sausage rolls etc.
    enjoy your day xxxxx

  120. Good afternoon Sue
I seem to have lost my Christmas Spirit. I'm seeing all these trees going up, pics on facebook, ive made the grand total of 16 Christmas cards and I'm just not there this year. Am I the only one thinking like that !! I really like the effect gained on the joy card and do think I will give that a go. I have tried the similar effect with the alcohol ink on acetate and that looks fab. The idea with the poinsettias is good. Isn't it funny how somethings just work when you are unsure how it will turn out.
I haven't got the bauble die myself but it's a clean classic and traditional card rolled into one.
I don't mean to be a bar humbug, cos I'm usually not but I can't wait to start the new year. I want a fresh start, on a positive foot , then hopefully I'm set for a good year.
    Have a great weekend everyone
    Lots if love
    Jo xx

  135. Hi Sue, I always look forward to double card days, even more to love :). The gilding on the first card is beautiful. It looks so different when you leave some of the flakes larger than normal. I think I have to get some lacquer and give it a go. The second card is wonderful with the white and gold theme. I always love the bows you make, they really set the card off so well. As always, thanks so much for sharing with us. x

I have everything else to make this card so I will definately have a go at this one as I still have several more Christmas cards to make yet. I think it is really classy and elegant.

I wish I was as organised as all of you ladies who have finished making your Christmas cards, then I could make a version of today's two beauties to put away as a springboard to get me started next year. As it is I've not completed a single one though I have managed to do quite a few die-cuts this week.
