Black Or Gold?

Good morning all!  Can you tell that I have been having a rummage through some of my older card files?  I thought for sure that I had posted these, but no where can they be found.  So today is another two-fer (two days in a row, can you believe it!) LOL  These cards are very similar in style so I didn't want to take up two days worth of blog posts.  You just have to tell me which style you prefer!  The first card was the very first card I made when I started making sampples for the Die D-Lite shows.  I just had this vision in my head from the moment I saw the Bonsai Tree die. I used two pieces of copy paper and taped them down over my coconut white card so that I was able to ink the band across the card neatly.  I used Black Soot distress ink and a piece of cut 'n dry foam to do this with.  Rather than using the usual circular motions, I prefer a sort of pouncing method so I don't accidentally catch the edge of the copy paper and ruin my nice band of colour.  Once inked, I stamped my sentiment using a black Archival ink as I feel that it gives the crispest black line for this.  I cut out the bonsai tree out of black card and inked through the die with a clear perfect medium pad.  I removed the die and covered it with clear embossing powder to give a shiny effect to the embossed portion of the die.  I glued it in place next to my sentiment.  As an afterthought, I noticed the very small circular die that was in the Medallion seven so I cut it in white and added it as a moon.  It would have been nice to use it before inking to create a void in the card to create the moon look as well.  I matted the card with a thin black mat before adding a double white mat with my usual pierced inner layer.  Finished dimensions (on this one) are 7" x 7 3/4" in size.

For the second card, I decided to go gold.  I used the Pastorale embossing folder on my coconut white card background.  Once embossed, I rubbed the design with Enchanted Gold gilding wax to highlight it.  I stamped my sentiment in the centre open area using a clear Perfect Medium pad and heat embossed it with gold powder.  I lined up the bonsai tree so it sat right between the lines and cut it.  I removed the white bonsait tree from the background and replaced it with one that I had cut out of soft gold card.  From the back of the card, I taped it back into place so it looks as if it had been inlaid.  This is also a really great technique to use if you need your cards to be very flat for posting.  I added a gold mat and then finished the card in the same way with a double white mat with a pierced inner layer.  Both cards are truly simple to create and complete.  Finished dimensions are 6 1/2" x 8" in size.  So what's your favourite?  All for now, Sue x

Keep the twofer coming - as for a favourite I do not have one, they are both so different the gold is very opulent loving the gilding wax highlights. But the black an white has a very haunted feel to it so I love them both.

    Hi Sue,
So the mermaid's had an outing at last! Impossible to say which of the designs I like more because they are so different. I'd say the first is a male card (or no-nonsense female) and the second is for females who like a suggestion of bling.
Sue, you must have a LARGE ROOM filled with cards............. and you are spoiling us rotten!
    Have a great day

Two lovely cards, but I really like the inlay technique of the gold card, so that one just gets my vote over the haunting black one! The D-lites are such clever dies.

  49. Good morning Sue,
Yesterday i buffed the tide of likes for the green and white card in favour for the first card, today might be the same i'm afraid as i absolutely love the 2nd card. The first card is beautiful in its own way, and probably what i would do for a man, whether it be a sympathy card or a just because card. The 2nd card is still pretty clean lines, but to me conveys quite a different message and is so beautiful with the embossed borders with that hint of gold gliding across them. The gold bonsai tree with the embossed impression behind just makes it stand out wonderfully.
Hope you have a great day,

    morning Sue
We are being spoilt again - today's gifts are both wonderful and certainly go in my 'less is more' and 'simple but very elegant' folders.
I love the colours and format of both cards and have to admit that I cannot make a favourite so am going for both of them!
I do not have this particular die but am being more and more convinced that it is a must. To me I not only see the beautiful tree but also a fantastic mermaid - I wonder if anyone else can see her or am I in my own little world?

  134. Hi Sue,
I love them both. I like the drama of black tree and the elegance of the gold one.
The inlay technique is a very good idea. I must have a go.

Love the twofers, I think the black and white does it for me, nice for a bereavement card.

  141. Hi Sue

These cards are beautiful, and if I had to choose, I would choose the moody monochrome. We have been lucky enough to have 4 cards in 2 days and they have all been stunning. :-)

    Kind regards

Oh what a difficult question, especially when I love both! The first one is plain but with class and the second one has such elegance and a look of luxury about it thanks to the gold, sorry it's both for me. 2 x 2 in two days we are getting spoilt and no mistake!

    Decisions ... Decisions ...
Love both cards and can't decide which I prefer - I'm intrigued though as to how you managed to cut the tree out of the white without flattening the embossing from the folder or is a case of which came first - the tree or the border??

  158. Two beautiful cards Sue. Like you, I think that the moon would have been better masked before inking, rather than stuck on top - but hindsight is a wonderful thing! Cutting out and inlaying is such a good idea for making flat cards - why haven't I thought of that? Can't make my mind up between the two cards - both super in their own way. x

  159. What beautiful cards today Sue, they are both equally stunning. I really like the gilding wax on the gold card, but (arms up my back here) if I had to choose it would have to be the black and white one. It is so simple, clean, clear and vivid. I love it. Hugs, Jen :-)

  160. Hi Sue
We are certainly being spoilt this week. I love both of the cards, but my favourite has to be the gold one. I think the bonsai teamed with the Pasorale embossing folder is lovely. I've used the bonsai die quite a lot lately and used different coloured gilding flakes and they are beautiful - make fabulous male cards.

  161. Both lovely cards. I prefer the second one myself. Love the gold..

  162. Hi Sue - again 2 for 1 - how lucky are we! Love both Sue but my preference would be the gold one as I think, as you say, the moon would have been better masked off to give a softer look on the black and white one.

  163. Choices, choices. The Bonsai D-Lite
is cute and if I had to choose a preference (I like them both)I'd pick the gold one because the gilded borders enhance the design. I love the inlaid tree too. A good trick I must remember.
