Faux Silk Snowflakes

Happy Friday!  Just one more Christmas card before I give you a break from them!  Not too long, though, as I do have a bunch of them just waiting for their day on the blog!  a little story for this one, whenever my daughter comes to visit, we take a day and go thrift store hopping.  She used to have to drag me kicking and screaming, but since I found my nifty dictionary last year, I have been raring to go!  I started looking at everything differently then.  It wasn't just junk anymore, it was treasures and since then I have found some really nice items for my card making.  The background on this card was the result of one of those finds.  There was a stack of this blue tissue paper at one of the shops for 25 cents (about 18p) and I just loved the vibrant blue so home it came with me (along with some great buttons I found).  There is a lovely technique called "faux silk" that I usually do with white tissue paper, but I thought let's see what it looks like with the blue tissue paper.  I love it!  I think it works a treat with the snowflakes too!  I watered down some Cosmic Shimmer dries clear glue and painted a piece of white card so it was entirely covered.  I use a piece of cut 'n dry foam for this as it's quicker.  Crumple up your tissue paper and then gently open it back up but don't take out all the wrinkles.  Lay it on your glue covered background and use your foam to tamp it down.  Be very gentle with it as it will tear quite easily.  I use a bit more of the glue mixture on the top to make sure it is nicely affixed.  Let it dry and trim it to size.  You can also use your heat tool to speed up the drying process.  I stamped my sentiment in black, then cut the ends at an angle so it would sit diagonally on the corner of my card.  I cut two small strips and used one of the egdeability inserts to cut them both.  I backed the cut out sections with a strip of blue card, then mounted them on foam pads then on to the edges of my sentiment strip.  I adhered a sticky adhesive sheet to a piece of white card then loaded it up with an assortment of the new snowflake dies and cut them all.  I micro beaded all the snowflakes for texture.  Some of them I placed two on top of each other and some were placed on the background on their own.  I placed an assortment of the snowflakes all over the background and one in the corner below the sentiment.  I added some half pearls to the centres of all of them as accents.  I double matted it in white and pierced the edges to finish it off.  You can see a few close ups below.  I love the micro beads on the snowflakes, it really makes them look frosty, doesn't it!  All for now, Sue x

  47. This is lovely Sue and I was smiling to myself as I watched you do the tutorial on C & C as it is a technique that is a favourite of mine. The micro beads look fabulous on the snowflakes and really bring them to life.

On my blog today I have a tutorial using your new Vintage Lace Accents border die. I sat all day yesterday afternoon/eve playing with some of my border dies to find out ways to 'grow' them so they can be used to make deep elegant borders or backgrounds behind aperture etc. Your dies look AMAZING when they are 'grown' and are even more filigree and lacy. I hope you can pop over and take a look as I would love your opinion.

Know what you mean about the treasure hunting, do it all the time. Everything i throw away i look at. Example in side junk mail look at the envelopes inside. Nice pattern in some of them. Stamp with any ladies you have, cut out and make clothes for them.Stamp lady on the card and dress with the cutout. Coke cans cut top and bottom off after washing it and cut down the tube put through your emboss and die cut machines. All things can be used if you think long enough.
Love this card and i have a mountain of tissue paper in all colours. Handy that. Yes your getting me in the Christmas mood.

Thrift shopping (I call it OT shopping) don't ask me why, my daughter has asked me several time's why I call it that, I aways answer her, I have no idea where or how the name came about lol. Anyway I love thrift/OT shopping, some of my fantastic lace that I have has come from such shops, also some FAB-U-LUS buttons (that I have not been able to bring myself to use YET) rotfl. Loved your shows yesterday (in particular) the one's with Nigel & Loune (hope thats how you spell her name), I had such a laugh watching you (which was VERY much needed in my house yesterday).

So far I have resisted buying the Grand Calibur, I've been using my Big Shot, but yesterday I gave in and I'm told it will be delivered tomorrow so I will be looking over your web as now I will be able to attempt to copy some of your backgrounds. I have most of the dies that were on the show but looking forward to those included with the machine Thank you so much for your inspiration.

  148. Hi Sue, I loved this card when you demonstrated it and the faux silk technique is a 'must try'. I have bought the multibuy with the 4 new designs as I already have a lot of the other ones that were in the POD. I also wanted to get your Vintage Lace sets but unfortunately only the Motifs were still available so I got them and will have to wait for the Accents to appear somewhere. Enjoyed all your shows very much and hope you now have a quiet week-end to recover.

I am so grateful you do this blog everyday. I set my tv recorder to record your demos and the bloomin thing failed - I am so upset. Luckily I saw your first demo at 9pm on Wednesday evenng and will be giving the faux silk technique a go at the weekend. Thank you again for sharing your ideas and techniques with us. A Spellbinder's DVD is a must (when you get time of course). I think us Sue followers should all demand that C&C do a ideas workshop with Sue similar to the "In the Classroom with Barbara".
