Hi guys, this card was one of those cards where I had a clear idea in my head of what I wanted it to look like, but it just wasn't falling in to place! I have about a three hour time limit before I just have to set a card aside and walk away! This sat on my table in the corner for about two weeks before I finally picked it back up and finished it. I loved the lacing on the borders because that is so my style and taste, but the rest of the card didn't sing to me. I finally finished it and still wasn't completely happy with it, but I saw the problem. It was several months back but I did demo this card on C & C, but I am not sure if you recall it, but I did the demo with the card in purples and lavender instead of the brown tones used here. It made all the difference for me in those colours! The only problem is that I did not get a chance to photograph that card before they sent it off to the person whose email I picked! So picture this card done in purple tones with a white background as it works so much better that way! The border was done with two of the floral doily borders and the vintage ribbon was used to lace between them. The background was embossed using the floral embossing folder. The focal element used the beaded square die template in the background. Then it was layered up using the floral doily motifs in two colours (one was cut in half and used as a shadow) then a smaller beaded square and the sentiment was stamped and cut out with the floral doily accent piece. I finished the card with a couple of floral doily corner pieces to fill in as accents. Change the sentiment or the colours and the card can be used for a number of other occasions! Hope you like it. I totally agree about the colors too, and I´m also sure, it would look awesome in some yellow tones or blue or even pink instead of the brown. But I´m totally thrilled about the laced border too no matter what colors are used, that´s a really awesome detail with the beautiful doilies here.

ReplyDeleteHi Sue. I love this card, especially the way it shows off the embossed background. I remember spending many an hour with a template and light box to create an embossed background & having this as the main feature. I feel we sometimes take for granted what our die-cutting machines can do at speed & cover up the beauty of the embossing, using it more for texture. I do. Thanks for the reminder. ReplyDeleteI get stuck (quite often) in lavender and pink mode. I find it difficult to get out of sometimes and as I make cards to sell for charity I try to remember not everbody has my 'good' taste, lol. So I think the card would be loved by someone who loves those tones. Love the ribbon work.

Purple is my favourite colour, but I like this too. I see nothing wrong in these colours,a nd it is a little different.

Perhaps because the colours are contrastive they lead the eye away from the lovely ribbon weaving in soft brown. This card probably needs to made tonally and that's why the purple and lavender tones work better - really love that ribbon weaving Sue. thanks for sharing it with us.

I really like this in the browns. I forget to use browns as a focal colour in their own right. So many points of interest in the card,but esp the embossing. It's gorgeous!

ReplyDeletewell this has confused me alittle today as you've said you don't like this card. Maybe I am not reading it right, but I think this is a lovely card. Do you think maybe you would have liked it more if you had used a soft ivory instead of the stark white? I am the complete opposite to some of your other followers, I love chocolate browns and black together. It is how you use them and what you use with them that makes the difference I find. I have created some of my best cards with this combo and sometimes just adding the tiniest hint of ivory, soft beigh and even candyfloss pink can completely change the look.
The only thing I would add to your card is some of your pearlised pva dots to center of flower corners and onto the corners of the beaded squares, but other than that I like it very much. I especially like your 'shadowing' by cutting another diecut in half. That technique you taught us is so useful and very effective, thank you.

Hi Sue, I think I would have added a touch of tattered rose to the white background - but that's probably because I love pink and brown together anyway. I smiled when I read about it sitting on the corner of the table as I often have one or more cards sitting waiting for my final decisions - I find if I glance at them each time I pass I will suddenly see what needs changing - and occasionally they almost need dusting by the time that happens! But so far I don't think I have ever completely given up on a card, they are all my children. Sue x
