Morning all! Today's card features a fun technique called Bargello squares. I did this technique on my DVD a few years ago and always find it interesting to use to create a unique background. I picked out several pieces of backing papers that I had in my leftover stash bin. You know, that pile of stuff you just can't throw away because you are sure you will need it for something down the line! (We all have them, so don't pretend you don't!)LOL This technique is great for that because you don't need too much and can actually use up those bits and pieces that are leftover! I picked three designs that had greys and pale yellow in them. I cut them into strips (1/2" wide) and then taped them to a piece of copy paper so they were all butted up in a row next to each other. Next you cut them in 1/2" strip across all the rows so you will end up with strips of paper that all have 1/2" squares of each of the different papers on them. Then you do the same process, but creating new patterns by offsetting them. Ordinarily, I go for an up down type of pattern, but I decided to see what it would look like with a purely random patterning of the strips. I rather liked it this way. Next I covered the entire piece with a sticky self adhesive sheet, peeled the backing paper off and covered it with micro beads for a textural look. On the bottom of the page, I ran a piece of redline tape across it and then ruched some silver vintage ribbon. I tied a messy bow and added a medium square Dazzler and crystal stick pins. For the focal element, I used the Opulent Ovals to cut a frame out of custard card. I used the Radiant Rectangles to cut a lacy die out of grey card to seat my sentiment on. I stamped my sentiment in black Archival ink on custard card and used the oval die from the Radiant Rectangle set to cut it out. I inked it very lightly with Antique Linen distress ink to highlight it and mounted it on foam in the centre. I added some cream 5mm flatback pearls to the outer frame as accents and a pearl swirl to the upper and lower opposite corners. Finally, I added a thin mat of custard card before my double mat of grey card with the usual inner pierced layer to finish it off. It's a really fun technique if you have never tried it, I hope you will give it a go! Finished dimensions are 6 1/2" x 8 1/4" in size. All for now, Sue x

A beautiful gift for this Tuesday morning - The background colouring is lovely and it's a technique I have not tried but certainly will.
I can already see some of the papers I can use and yes I do have this drawer that is crammed full with bits of beautiful paper/card which I cannot bring myself to throw away as they are 'certainly too nice and will certainly be useful' and so now they will.
Today's gift is a card with something a little bit different and it stands proud!
Another day without papercrafting and I'm getting withdrawal systems!!

ReplyDeleteGood morning Sue,
ReplyDeleteImagine suggesting that we hoard things us crafters, i'm sure we don't no what you mean, LOL. Anyway your beautiful card todays' background technique reminds me of a patchwork quilt in design. I really like how you manage to get your ribbon to match the base and pricked layer. It comes across as identical in your pictures.
Hope you have a good day as i'm sure you will be busy making samples and demos for the upcoming show.
love and crafty hugs

Hi Sue,

Morning Sue,
ReplyDeleteVictoria has asked where the word Bargello originates from, it's from the Bargello Palace in Florence. It's an embroidery technique used to make patterns which is used on chairs in the palace.
Something else we have learned today.
Your card is beautiful a great use of colours.
Have a great day.

I've not heard of this technique, but it looks brilliant and I shall give it a try. The card is fantastic and initially I thought it was a 'whole' piece of background paper. Grey/yellow is a beautiful colour combo. I like the custard card too. Thanks Sue.

Hi Sue. WOW what a fantastic card today !! I really love this beautiful background !! I have never seen or heard about this technique so it is all new to me. I love the patterned papers and the colours you have used. What a great technique. Please, please, please could you put a tutorial for it on your blog. I love how you made your ruched ribbon too. As always I love your fab bow and you have used radiant rectangles for your sentiment !! Fantastic. I can't wait to see you on tv but I am a little confused. Are you on c+c tomorrow night ? Or Sunday ? Or both? Please let us know love Tres x x x
ReplyDeleteVery alluring card, very detailed and loving the colour combo with the patterned papers. You always put together great combos and highlight the dies perfectly, tfs
ReplyDeleteMy first reaction on seeing this was 'Wow!' - it's stunning. I love the bargello background and covering it with micro beads seems to bring it all together so it looks like a single piece of paper rather than 'bits' (well, I don't know about in real-life but on the screen it does).
ReplyDeleteThink it would have been perfect without the bow - just a tad too far :)
Hi Sue
ReplyDeleteYes like this background, not keen on the colours though.

Hi Sue, you did make me laugh referring to the bits and pieces that we don't throw away! You know us all too well! I love the look of the Bargello technique and really must make a point of having a go with it-so much easier than piecing individual squares together. Thank you for the great ideas. x
ReplyDeleteGreat colour combination toady Sue. I will have a go at using up some of MY 'can't throw it away' stash on a bargello background.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue! Hello everyone! Gorgeous card Sue and love the technique. Yup, I'm sure we're all guilty of keeping leftover pieces just incase they "come in handy!" Great way to use them.
