Purple And Gold, Really!

Morning all!  Straight away I'm going to say, I like these colours together!  I think it may spark a debate among the comments that are left, but they work for me.  Every once in a while you just need to let yourself go, step outside of your comfort zone and have a play with something new.  These were new for me, no playing it safe with teal here!  I chose a predominantly gold background, using various backing papers that I had in my stash ( the eagle eyed among you will no doubt spot the houndstooth in there!)  I picked out two shades of purple, one slightly darker than the other.  I used the Samantha Walker Antique Frames and Accents and cut the frame in both shades of the purple.  I nipped off the very top part of the frame, making it more of a rectangle shape.  I layered up the two of them but turned them in the opposite ways and glued them on top of each other.  Since the pattern does not line up this way, it shows bits of both colours as you can see in the pic below.  I stamped my sentiment and then cut it out using the same frame, but I discarded the frame this time and just used the sentiment.  Mounting it inside the Antique frames using 3D foam.  I tied some Rivera Lilac vintage ribbon going both up and down and across my card meeting and tying a messy bow. n I cut a circle out of some gold felt and made a spiral flower for the centre of my bow.  I added some foliage pieces to either side of it.
I glued three gold glints in the bottom corner and used my Cosmic Shimmer gold PVA glue to add dots around my focal element and the entire edge of the card.   How do you feel about the colour, still not sure or loving it!  All for now, Sue x

  1. Good morning Sue. Love the style of the card - but sadly not the colours. Purple and gold together certainly do not do it for me. Have a great day.

  71. Morning Sue. I have to say I have mixed feelings about the colour. I think that may be the photo though. When I first looked I thought no I don't like it, but once I looked at the close-up I liked it. I think the colours, especially the gold look very hard in the first photo, but much more subtle in the second.

I love the design though. :)

Perhaps it would be interesting to do two similar cards showing one that you feel 'works' and one that doesn't and showing why (or is that a mystery of life!!) x Jackie

  164. Hi Sue, Well I love this card but I've been really puzzled by the colour question as on my laptop screen it's a lovely dark delphinium blue (same colour as Dean's sweater on Ideal World POTD I've got on tv at the moment)and a honey cream - (very classy in houndstooth) - also I thought I recognised the felt as being the colour I've just bought from Sam. So I popped upstairs to check the card out on my other computer - where it still looks just as lovely - and blue and cream! I have to admit I wear a lot of (not bright) purples and I like amethysts but can't bear them set in gold, it has to be silver for me. So if the colours on the card are really really purple and really really gold I might have a problem! Hope you might have it with you at Ally Pally so we can all have a final verdict! Sue x

  165. Oh I feel a bit naughty saying this a bit like the pupil talking back to the teacher.lol but I think it would work better for me if there was a layer of purple under the pattern paper.

That would tie the colours together better for me.

I have to agree that on my screen it's coming across beige and dark blue.
I would forgive purple mixed with anything even though teal is my new fav colour I still have a soft spot for purple.
Hope you are having a nice time.
Working on new sample????????? Any hints on any new deals??!!!!!!
    Can't blame me for trying.lol

  166. Hi Sue,
Quick one today as I must try to sleep (again). I really like this. It is very reminiscent of Palaces of splendour. I am so tired sorry my friend that I cannot for the life of me remember where they are but, there are several Palacial buildings with similar colour schemes in their rooms and they are totally fabulous. A little bit country Manor estate too I think.
People mistakingly thing blue is the royal colour but infact purple and gold (gold colour not just Gilt) are often more associated with Royalty (not certain if that is our Monarchy too though, must check my facts on this I think).
Well, anyway Sue, this has the big thumbs up from me. I think I would love to see this with the colours swapped round too (gold frame, purple papers etc). Bet it would look totally different.
    Night night. Linda x

  167. Gold and purple were traditionally the colors of Royalty! I'm sure I remember reading that at one point in time no one other than Royalty could wear purple, it was against the law. Given that I have to say that gold and purple work together rather well! Very pretty card.

  168. Hi Sue, I love the style of you're card but can see why you're unsure about the color combo. I made a card with purple, yellow and pink, I got the color mix from the design on a toothbrush handle.

    Happy Paddy's day for Saturday

I do like this colour combination and think it would also work well with a slightly darker shade of purple too!

  179. I am liking the purple and gold, I think I would have put the purple pva dots all round the outside rather than the gold? Maybe this is a lesson, if putting together an unusual colour combo, limit the palette to two colours. Thanks for continued inspiration.
