Good morning my crafty friends! I felt the need for a Christmas card today. I am often asked what inspires me when I sit down to create a card. Rarely can I answer that easily. Today, however, I found this velvet trim one day and I fell in love with it. It was an odd colour, a sort of celery green, but I just wanted to use it so I designed the card around it. At the time, I was working on Christmas cards for a show so this is my interpretation of a Christmas card using my funny celery green velvet trim. I loved the way it came out, mostly because I love unusual colour combos for Christmas cards. You see traditional ones all the time and they start to feel overdone sometimes to me. And even though this one is red and green, it is far from traditional. I started by embossing my white background using the Holiday Magic embossibility folder. I cut a Holly accent border glued it to the side of my card. I ran a strip of redline tape down the edge of it, peeled off the red liner and ruched my velvet trim. I dyed some seam binding using Shabby Shutters distress ink and made a messy bow. I spritz it for that shabby chic look. I added two pearl stick pins and a Tim Holtz button to the centre and glued it on my ruched trim. Next I cut out the Holly Motif in the matching green card. I cut a Labels 22 frame out of white card using the two largest dies in the set. I added mounting foam to the back of my frame and placed it over my Holly Motif. I trimmed away the bits of it that were exposed outside my frame, leaving a pretty filigree look through my frame. I stamped my sentiment and cut it out Holly Motif. I nipped away the edges leaving only the centre and mounted it with foam in the centre of my frame. Out of red card, I cut several of the layered poinsettia die. I stamped them using the matching Heartfelt stamps for definition. I layered them up and added them to the corner of my frame for a pop of colour. I added some flatback pearls to the centre of the poinsettias. A swirl added to the top and bottom of the frame accented it and piercing around the edges finished it off. Do you share my taste in non traditional Christmas cards? All for now, Sue x
This is a beautiful card today Sue and I love the ribbon trim and bow.

Good morning Sue
ReplyDeleteAn absolutely stunning card today, I especially love the colours you've used. The filigree look inside the frame is so pretty and such a clever idea you give us such inspiration thanks Sue
Hugs x
Great card Sue , colours great unusual .
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, another fabulous card, love the colours, and the trim works perfectly. Bx
ReplyDeleteI love non-traditional colors on Christmas cards and I actually like the colors you have used on this card. But for my eye I don't think they match together that well, maybe it is the flowers that are just a bit too dark and rich in color for the celery green. Perhaps would work better if the flowers had some kind of frosty look on them. Great layout though and beautiful dies.
ReplyDeleteHugs from Finland, Eemeli
Gosh! Sue! This card is stunning I love the unusual green colour it works perfectly it is absolutely gorgeous and the rouched velvet gives it a really opulent feel!
ReplyDeleteI like Christmas cards that are not traditional in answer to your question; something a little bit different is good in my books.
I haven't tried to dye seam binding I assume you used white? Or was it cream before you started? Is it difficult to do? Do let us know please?
Crafty Hugs

I like it Sue! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGM Sue - love this - also like the pearly button. Took my take on your Holiday Tree design in gold and black to a fund raising coffee morning earlier this week - it got lots of admiring glances and 'how unusual' comments - a more contemporary feel was popular with the 40ish age bracket but the older ladies still preferred the more traditional colour combos I think. Will have a go at this one!

ReplyDeleteHa, I LOVE this colour combo, much more interesting than the traditional red and green. Somewhere I have some of that exact same ribbon (in different colours, got it in the States at Joanne's I think), you have just inspired me with how I could use it, so thank you!! Love the combination of that ribbon with the seam binding! Rest of the card looks fab too!!!
ReplyDeleteMorning Sue, I rarely make xmas cards in the traditional colours, depends on my mood and inspiration. I love the colours on this card, great layout too. Emma
ReplyDeleteYes, I can go along with this colour combo, no problem. I'm not so keen on colours such as turquoise or purple for Christmas though, they seem all wrong to me.
ReplyDeleteThis card is pretty! (I loved the labels 20 buckle card, still waiting for my matching stamps to arrive).
Hi Sue,
ReplyDeleteI love the green and white and the layout of the card, but like a couple of the other ladies I think the poinsettias are a bit too dark they are the first thing that hits the eye perhaps softened with micro beads would have looked good.
Have a good day.
Lydia

Absolutely love it - definitely works for me.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, this card is absolutely beautiful. You really are so clever!! Love Sam xxx
ReplyDeleteHi Sue
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning! I love the colours but do agree that the red is too deep for this shade of green. Personally I would use a deeper green - think I must be a traditionalist at heart!
Hi Sue What a stunning card! The colour works really well and I prefer a twist on the non traditional Christmas cards....I just wish I had your thought process. Take Care Love Michelle xxx

Hi Sue, Todays card is beautiful,
ReplyDeleteCheers Margaret T, X
Fab card love the colours and the poinsetta.Laura O
ReplyDeleteOooh! That ribbon is gorgeous! No wonder you wanted to use it!!! I think non traditional cards that use some of the more traditional elements look very eye catching. If they were all the same in someone's home it would all look boring. Who wants boring?!
ReplyDeleteThank you for my fabulous gift that arrived yesterday! I loved it! Had no idea what you might send, as it was great just seeing my name in your list. That's so much! Claire xxx
Morning Sue
ReplyDeleteGorgeous card. I love that shade of green, it is so soft

Yet another beautiful card. Used the Poinsetta dies last night on red fablon. Worked well to my surprise. Must get the holly dies.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue,
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful card the whole design is stunning, love the celery green, would choose a lighter colour for the poinsettia possably Peach/Salmon maybe, having said that this is a card I would really love to make.
Love BrenLel
Good Morning sue from a dreich Glasgow. After seeing your cards I feel much better, more so the Christmas ones at this time of the year.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shade of green there's a saying here that red and green should never be seen except on an Irish coleen but it looks wonderful on your card.

Hi Sue
ReplyDeleteA beautiful card with traditional red and unusual shade of green.I think it is wonderful.
Love todays card Sue, i,m not a lover of green but i have fallen in love with this shade oh i must go and seek some.
ReplyDeletelovely card Sue must try
ReplyDeleteHi sue I love this card especially the filigree effect inside the frame,i must give that a go,I'm like a few other bloggers and think the poinsettias are a touch to dark for this shade of green, but the ribbon looks lovely! Love lesley xx
ReplyDeleteI love the colour combo and I love celery too! X
ReplyDeleteI think this a lovely card, I'm usually a traditionalist colourwise but wouldn't mind having a go at this combination.

Hi Sue
ReplyDeleteLoving the Xmas cards keep them coming lol!
Love the colourways of this
Thank you
Lizzie (serial copycat)xox
I like the card but am a Christmas traditionalist - I love German Xmas Markets having lived there and they tend not to go down the modern route!
ReplyDeleteIt's all red, gold and green with nutcrackers for me! I do experiment though but come back to what is 'real' Christmas for me.
Re Poinsettias I have found that if you haven't got the JustRite stamps, inking through the dies with the paper still in, looks similar.
Also if you place the smaller poinsettia at the bottom of the medium and 'weave' the petals through - I find it very effective for a smaller less in your face embellishment. I used it at the side of a stamped robin scene and am really pleased.
Such an unusual twist to the traditional colours, and it looks great.
ReplyDeleteI like your card today Sue but my favourite colours for Christmas cards are blue, silver and White, I love snowflakes and snowy scenes. X
ReplyDeleteHi Sue
ReplyDeleteI definately share you taste in non traditional Christmas cards! Love these colurs and the flowers xx
i love it, i do like non trad Christmas cards, I can't abide santas x
ReplyDeleteI love this green, but l would not say this was not a traditional Christmas card. Poinsettias are traditional especially in red. You have Holly accents. So l would disagree with you. But what a stunning card love the colours and will copy. Hugs Ann
ReplyDeleteLove this card Sue, love the colours, its a very unusual green but I sometimes think unusual colours make it a more individual card. I love the poinsettia die anyway its one of my fav christmas dies, in fact now I've seen todays card I'm gonna get my poinsettia dies out and make some more cards cos I haven't used them for a while lol. Thanks Sue!
ReplyDeleteBig hugs
Maxine xx
Not keen on the colour but I don't like green sorry, I do like what you did inside the frame, showing all the versatility of the dies again. I am off to Fort Myers next week I hope you have saved me some of the sunshine.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, in answer to your question - yes I do!
ReplyDeleteIn my eyes this card is a perfect Christmas Card. Love it love it love it.
Gail C. x
Hi Sue,
ReplyDeleteLike you, I am not a lover of the traditional (overdone) red/green Christmas cards, but this is a super re-interpretation of that. Apart from the green being very different I think that leaving much white makes this eyecatching and rather special.
Sue
Hi Sue, love this card, different is good, especially at this time of year, there are sooooo many cards that are a 'variation on a theme' Lynn xx
ReplyDeletewhat a refreshing change from traditional greesn.

I totally love the ribbon and trim - but don't find it unusual at all. It isn't the dark green I grant you - but I don't feel that it's out of the ordinary (well, it's not to me anyway) - in fact its miles better than the dark greens normally seen...
